Seabourn Venture. Arctic Expedition Part One

On Thursday we flew three and a half hours from EDI to LYR. It's known as the most northern city in the world. It was a charter flight with all Seabourn guests onboard.

That's where we would be boarding our ship, the Seabourn Venture!! It was a quick ten minute transfer from the airport to the ship and we were onboard by 4 PM. We had the usual muster drill and a presentation to meet the large expedition team who will be guiding us on this trip. All types of experts are represented from ornithologists to ecologists.

We had some delicious pre dinner sushi at The Club and saw one of the sushi chefs who was on the Pursuit.
Dinner was at the Collonade which is the more casual restaurant onboard. We really enjoyed this on our Amazon expedition last year. Of course this time we would not be eating outside since the temperatures were about 7° C. Had a decent crab cake, Manhattan clam chowder and seared salmon. The salmon was definitely the star as it came cooked to order (a perfect rare)). I don't usually get dessert but we both had some wonderfully nutty pistachio ice cream.

There was a welcome aboard party at The Club with a really good duo who sang popular hits. And we asked them to play our wedding song "Fly Me To The Moon"!! And of course you have to dance when your song is played!! It was then time to head back to the cabin.

This morning we were woken up by an announcement from Udo (the expedition team leader). They spotted polar bears!! A mama bear and two cubs!! The "P" in SPAM!! They were quite far away so it helped that the shipboard camera had a zoom lens so you could see them on the TV.

Today we had some scenic cruising and stopped at Lilliehöökbreen glacier. Definitely the largest glacier I have ever seen.
Then it was time for a mandatory rest period before we had lunch in the Collonade. They had a very tasty meatball and pasta special!! Tremendously satisfying on a cool day.

The expedition team set up a schedule for zodiacs to be able to make a landing. We decided to sit this one out and just enjoy the views from the ship. We had some delicious hot chocolate sitting out on deck 6 aft. We'll get ready for dinner later back at the Collonade.
