Riga, Latvia

Today we had a walking tour of Riga including the old city. Lots of Art Nouveau Architecture to see along the streets.
Then as we got into the old city, there was some Art Deco, accentuated by that famous art deco chain Circle K. Along the way we stopped for some meringue cookies and also some cheese biscuits.

The Old City has three main squares with lots of shops and restaurants.

It also happened to be the traditional dance and song festival so we got to see some of the performances.

Latvia's story of occupation is similar to Estonia's, but it feels like the Russians let some of the Latvian architecture and symbols stay. For instance, the freedom monument erected when Latvia declared independence from Russia was not destroyed during the Soviet occupation.

Children begin to learn English in 1st grade and then they can choose between German and Russian in 4th grade. Our guide thought Russian will soon be removed from the curriculum.

After the tour we decided not to take the bus back to the ship and instead found a place for lunch called Two More Beers.
Some really good beers and interesting local dishes.

A very fun city. I would come back here to explore more.
