April 2022: Discovery Princess

April 10, 2022  Fly to Los Angeles

Our United First class flight went well. I was able to sleep a couple hours. We got our bags quickly and checked in with the transfer representative. We waited about an hour and 10 minutes. Glenn went back to get an update on when the first shuttle would arrive. The rep said she did not know as they were having trouble reaching anyone at the bus company. We decided to take a taxi.

We found the taxis and headed to the port. Boarding took a while since there was a long line. We made it onboard. Lunch was Gigi's for salad and pizza. We went to our Muster station. We took a quick rest in the cabin.

Then we toured around a bit. We found a couple bar stools at Crooners. Roney is a very funny bartender. He does not like it when guests order single malt scotch with soda water. We met a very nice couple from Arizona - Jim and Barb. They had been on last week. We got their tips for the ports. We decided to get room service dinner and watch My Cousin Vinny.

The ship feels very full with a lot of kids. Barb heard this week has over 3,000 people.

April 11, 2022  Sea Day
We had a good Sea Day. I worked most of the day as Glenn relaxed. We had lunch at the Salty Dog Grill. I had the chicken sandwich and Glenn had a cheeseburger. I got a pedicure.

We listened to the house band play jazz in the Piazza. We ran into Barb and Jim sot hat was fun. We went to the Platinum happy hour and the dining room for dinner. Service was a little slow, but the food was decent. We had a salad with goat cheese, French Onion soup, and snapper with cous cous. The French Onion wasn't as beefy as what we had on the Ruby. The snapper needed a sauce. After dinner, we headed to Crooners. The piano player did a great job with Best of Broadway.

April 12, 2022 Cago San Lucas
We had a great day in Cabo. We had a lovely sail in. Glenn and I had the binoculars out looking for whales. We were quite surprised when one surfaced right next to the ship. We took the tender in. We had a site inspection at Zoetry Casa del Mar. Gorgeous resort. We then tried to go to a restaurant called The Office, but it was packed and only taking reservations. We saw a sign for Baja Brewing on our drive in so we went back there. It turned out it was a bar/restaurant with a rooftop patio overlooking the harbor.

The beers were pretty good and the food was average bar food. We headed back to the ship. Had a little Plantinum happy hour and then hung out at Crooner's chatting with a lot of fun people.

April 13, 2022 Mazatlan
Our Ceviche class excursion was cancelled. We didn’t really feel like figuring out another excursion. I worked in the morning and we relaxed a little on deck. We had pizza for lunch. In the afternoon, we walked over to the Tres Islas brewery. It’s about a 10-minute walk from the port. The beers were really good.

After we got back, we headed to The Retreat – the adults-only pool. We chatted with Mary and Tim – one of the couples from Crooner’s. We decided on the Salty Dog Gastropub for dinner. It’s $18 and you can pick two dishes. The menu is really weird. It’s all tiny plates with one burger, a fried chicken sandwich, and poutine. I thought the asparagus and short rib were really good. We had a nice window table to watch sail away. We headed to the comedy show – AJ Jamal. He was on In Living Color. It was pretty typical cruise humor. We tried Take 5 for the jazz, but the trio hasn’t really gelled together yet. We ended at Crooner’s with the piano player.

April 14, 2022 Puerto Vallarta
We had a great day in Puerto Vallarta. We got picked up at the port and headed to Secrets / Dreams Bahia Mita. We had a nice tour and lunch. We took a nap and the headed to Platinum happy hour. Dinner was a Gig's Pizzeriaia. The veal raviolis were so good as were the calzones. We enjoyed Meridian the party band and then hung out at Crooner's.

April 15, 2022  Sea Day
We had a good Sea Day. I worked most of the day. We tried the riddle trivia. It was fun and different, but we didn't win. We had burgers for lunch at the grill. We tried the Crown Grill for cocktails and attended the Captain's Circle happy hour. The most traveled guest had over  2,400 days on Princess cruises. For dinner, we went to the French Bistro. It was really good.  I had the escargot and Sea Bass. The escargot came in little deep fried balls. After dinner, we hung out at Crooner's and had a great time with Mary and Tim.

April 16, 2022  Sea Day
We had a fun last Sea Day. We lost at a couple trivias, went to the buffet for lunch and learned some magic tricks. We had a terrific dinner at Sabatini's and had a fun last night at Crooners.

April 17, 2022  Back to Back Switch

We had an easy time switching cabins. We met in the Vista Lounge around 8:30 am after breakfast in the dining room. They lead us off the ship around 10:00 am. We waited about 40 minutes in the terminal and were led back on around 11 am. We visited Crooners bar. Vlada made Glenn a Bloody Mary with Bourbon. We were trying to figure out what to call it. We landed on Bloody American but decided that sounds a bit insulting so now we just whisper it to each other and laugh. Lunch was at the buffet. We enjoyed our new mini-suite cabin. We paid $99 per person to upgrade and it was totally worth it. Glenn watched a movie in his side of the cabin. I read my book on the couch, napped, and watched Sail away. Dinner was the buffet. We spent the evening at Crooner's.

April 18, 2022 Sea Day
We had a relaxing Sea Day. Glenn met up wtih some of the people from the Facebook Group. I read a book. We had lunch at the buffet. We had dinner at Gigi's. The Maitre'D ushered us in and I said, "I know what you like." She brought us ravolis, pizza, calzones, and the veggie antipasto. It was so fun. We ended the night at Crooners.

April 18, 2022  San Francisco
We had a fun day in San Francisco. I spent 4 1/2 hours on hold with Disney Cruise Line in the morning so we didn't get out quite as early as we anticipated. We had a great lunch at Hog Island, walked down the waterfront to Ghiradelli Square, enjoyed the beer garden as San Francisco brewing, an Irish Coffee at Buena Vista, and some people and bird watching at Pier 39.

When we got back, I was so tired so I went to bed. Glenn had a buffet dinner.

April 19, 2022 Sea Day

Yesterday was a Sea Day so we relaxed at the Wake  Veiw Bar and pool facing the wake of the ship. I took a nap while Glenn watched the officer talk on navigation. Roney, the Crooner's bartender, was very happy to see us. He was very worried when we didn't show up the night before. We really enjoyed the live jazz with the House band.  We went to Crown Grill for dinner. It was good, but lacked the dramatic flair of the Ruby Princess. No leaking ceilings. No broken chairs. One night cap at Crooner's chatting with a nice couple from Long Beach.

April 20, 2022 Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara is the cutest town ever. Just gorgeous. We took a short trolley tour. Then, we headed down State Street. We went to Joe's Cafe for breakfast, Figuera Brewing, and Santa Barbara winery before heading back to the ship.

We had a nice evening in Crooner's and buffet dinner before calling it an early night.

April 21, 2022 San Diego
I've been battling a cold so I rested most of the day. I noticed earlier in the week that the Padres were playing at home. We bought general admission tickets since our all aboard time wasn't until 9:30 pm. We headed out to the ballpark around 4:30 pm. We got lucky and a taxi was dropping off at the port just as we walked up. We had a great time walking around the stadium.

We found a happy hour for $5 local beers at one of the bars inside the stadium. We found a great standing room only spot to watch a few innings. Then, we walked for about 5 minutes to a good spot to find a taxi and headed back to the port. So happy we were able to see a game. We stopped by Crooners for a little piano music.

April 22, 2022 Ensenada
We took a terrific wine tasting tour. We visited Santo Thomas in downtown Ensenada. Then, we stopped at a cheese shop to try some cheese. It wasn't really a traditional tasting. It was more like a deli tasting. Then, we headed to Magoni winery and tasted wine under a gorgeous tree.

Lunch was a 5 course meal at Finca Altozano. We will definitely be back to Guadalupe Valley.
